Anti-Discrimination Student Leader Mahdi Hasan Granted Bail

Mahdi Hasan, the district secretary of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Habiganj, was granted bail on Sunday following his arrest on charges of obstructing police duties. He was brought before the Habiganj Judicial Magistrate Court at 8:30 a.m., and the bail hearing commenced at 10:00 a.m. the same morning.

Hasan had been arrested late on Saturday evening. Following his detention, more than a hundred leaders and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement gathered outside the Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station to protest. They staged an overnight demonstration demanding an immediate court hearing for Hasan’s bail. Since the court could not convene during the night, he was brought in the next morning to continue the proceedings.

The incident is linked to an earlier arrest in the area. On Thursday midnight, Enamul Hasan, vice president of the Shayestaganj Sadar Union unit of the Student League, was detained by the local police for involvement in activities associated with the banned faction of the organisation. In response, leaders and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement organised a sit-in at Shayestaganj Police Station on Friday afternoon. During this protest, a group of activists, led by Mahdi Hasan, occupied the officer-in-charge’s office.

The table below summarises the key details regarding the arrests and bail:

Name Position Date & Time of Arrest Allegation Bail Date & Time Court/Police Station
Mahdi Hasan District Secretary, Anti-Discrimination Student Movement 03 Jan 2026, Evening Obstructing police duties 04 Jan 2026, 10:00 a.m. Habiganj Judicial Magistrate Court
Enamul Hasan Vice President, Shayestaganj Sadar Union Student League 01 Jan 2026, Midnight Involvement in banned Student League activities Shayestaganj Police Station

These events have highlighted both the political tension in Habiganj and the growing influence of student movements in the district. Students across schools and colleges have reacted strongly, reflecting widespread concern over administrative and police handling of local protests. Experts suggest that the assertive presence of student activism will likely prompt local authorities to adopt more vigilant and responsible measures in managing public demonstrations.

Regarding Mahdi Hasan’s bail, many observers have described it as a significant victory for the anti-discrimination movement. Activists and supporters view it as a morale booster for student leaders, reinforcing their commitment to peaceful advocacy. Residents of the district have also expressed hope that such incidents of political interference and violence will diminish, paving the way for a more transparent and accountable governance framework.
