Shafiul Islam, one of Bangladesh’s most dependable fast bowlers, has officially announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket. Though he continued to feature regularly in domestic competitions, Shafiul had been absent from the national team for several years. Once regarded as a pillar of Bangladesh’s pace attack, the 36-year-old has now decided to bring an end to a distinguished cricketing career.
On Sunday evening, 4 January, Shafiul took to his official Facebook page to make the announcement. In an emotional post, he wrote:
“Assalamu Alaikum. Today, I am making the most difficult decision of my career. I, Shafiul Islam, hereby announce my retirement from all forms of professional cricket. Wearing the red and green of Bangladesh has been the greatest pride of my life.”
He expressed heartfelt gratitude to all who supported him throughout his journey, including the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), his teammates, coaches, and countless fans. “Without your prayers and encouragement, reaching this stage would not have been possible,” he wrote. Shafiul also offered an apology for any inadvertent hurt he may have caused during his career:
“If I have unintentionally caused anyone pain or distress, I sincerely apologise. I am now stepping into a new chapter of life, and I hope everyone will keep my family and me in their prayers. I have been with cricket, and I will remain with cricket in spirit. Thank you all.”
Shafiul made his international debut in 2007 in a List ‘A’ match and played his final international appearance in March 2020, a T20 International against Zimbabwe. Over the course of his career, he featured in 91 international matches, claiming 107 wickets and establishing himself as a reliable and disciplined pace bowler for Bangladesh.
