An Indian woman has married a Pakistani man and converted to Islam, creating a cross-border love story that has captured widespread attention. The woman, a follower of Sikhism named Sarbjit Kaur, had travelled to Pakistan last year to participate in a ten-day celebration marking the 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. Her visa, which was valid until 13 November, expired shortly after her arrival, yet she remained in Pakistan.
During her stay, Sarbjit Kaur married Nasir Hussain, a resident of Sheikhupura, Pakistan, whom she had known since 2016 through social media. The couple’s friendship gradually developed over the years, culminating in marriage. Prior to the wedding, Sarbjit converted to Islam and adopted the name Noor Fatima. The nikahnama (marriage certificate) records that the 48-year-old bride gave a dower of PKR 10,000, which has already been paid in full.
Sources have confirmed that Pakistani Rangers recently escorted her to the Wagah border, where formal procedures were conducted before handing her over to Indian authorities. Sarbjit’s lawyer, Advocate Ahmed Hasan Pasha, told Geo News that his client is returning to India voluntarily. “Under the Foreigners Act of 1946, Sarbjit Kaur cannot legally remain in Pakistan without proper documentation,” he explained. Once the necessary formalities are completed, she will apply for a spouse visa to return to Pakistan and pursue permanent residence alongside her husband.
Authorities added that she had previously appeared before a judicial magistrate in Sheikhupura, where she confirmed under oath that she converted to Islam and married of her own free will, without any external pressure. She expressed her desire to live with her husband in Pakistan.
