Germany is currently bracing for a severe escalation in winter weather conditions as Storm Elli sweeps across Central Europe. Large swathes of the country have already been blanketed in snow, and meteorologists warn that the situation is set to become significantly more hazardous over the weekend. With a powerful low-pressure system moving directly toward the heart of the continent, the nation faces a dual threat of heavy snowfall and treacherous “black ice.”
According to weather expert Adrian Leyser, speaking to Der Spiegel, Storm Elli is expected to make its full impact felt from early Friday morning. The northern regions of Germany, stretching from the North Sea coast to the eastern borders, are in the direct line of fire. Forecasts predict an additional 10 to 20 centimetres of fresh snow, with gale-force winds likely to create massive snowdrifts, rendering roads and pavements impassable.
While the south and west may experience slightly warmer air, the danger remains acute. Meteorologists anticipate “freezing rain,” where snow melts mid-air only to freeze instantly upon hitting the frigid ground, creating lethal, glass-like conditions on motorways.
Table: Regional Weather Impact Forecast
| Region | Expected Precipitation | Primary Hazard | Travel Advisory |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northern Germany | 10–20 cm Snowfall | Snowdrifts & Blizzards | High Risk: Avoid Travel |
| Central Highlands | Heavy Snowfall | Blocked Mountain Passes | Winter Tyres Mandatory |
| South & West | Freezing Rain | Black Ice & Sleet | Extreme Caution Advised |
| Coastal Areas | Storm Surges / Snow | Branch Breakage Risks | Parks/Cemeteries Closed |
The extreme weather has already triggered a crisis in the medical sector. Gerald Gaß, head of the German Hospital Association (DKG), confirmed that emergency departments are seeing a dramatic surge in admissions. The “glazing” of roads has led to a spike in orthopedic injuries, with citizens suffering fractures to wrists, hips, and shoulders, as well as head traumas from falls.
Medical professionals have urged the elderly to remain indoors, as hospitals grapple with both increased patient loads and existing staffing shortages.
The severity of the storm has forced unusual cancellations. In Hamburg, all funeral services and memorial events scheduled for Friday and Saturday have been postponed. Authorities cited the risk of heavy snow causing tree limbs to snap, posing a fatal threat to mourners. Consequently, all city cemeteries will remain closed until Monday morning.
Transport and education have also been hit hard:
Deutsche Bahn: Significant delays are expected across northern and north-eastern routes. High-speed ICE trains will operate at reduced speeds to mitigate ice damage.
Education: Numerous schools have transitioned to online learning to ensure student safety.
Public Safety: Residents in coastal areas, such as Fehmarn, are advised to stockpile at least three days’ worth of food and essential supplies.
As Storm Elli moves south-east on Saturday, a fresh influx of arctic air is expected to keep temperatures well below freezing, with conditions only likely to stabilise by Sunday afternoon.
