Awami League leader’s house set on fire, journalist’s house bombed in Sirajganj

Sirajganj district was rocked by two violent incidents on Saturday night, as political tensions and local disputes escalated into attacks on residential properties. In one incident, the residence of Md. Yahia, organisational secretary of Daulatpur Union Awami League, in Southpara, Belkuchi, was deliberately set on fire. On the same night, journalist Shariful Islam Inna’s house in the Diyar Dhangar neighbourhood of Sirajganj town was targeted with petrol bombs.

The first attack occurred around 2:00 am when assailants set fire to Md. Yahia’s home. Speaking to reporters, Yahia said, “The fire was intended to kill me. I was not at home due to pending political cases, but my wife, children, and other family members managed to escape unharmed. Nevertheless, the attackers’ actions caused significant damage to our house and furniture.”

Belkuchi police station officer-in-charge, Sheikh Farid Uddin, confirmed that police had visited the scene following reports of the fire. “As of Sunday afternoon, the victims had not submitted formal complaints. Legal action will follow if complaints are filed,” he said.

The second incident occurred at approximately 9:00 pm in the Diyar Dhangar neighbourhood. Shariful Islam Inna, general secretary of the Sirajganj Press Club and district correspondent for NTV and Amar Desh newspaper, reported that his home, located on the boundary between two villages, was deliberately targeted. Inna stated, “There has been ongoing conflict between the Diyar Dhangar and Soyagobind (Bhangabari) neighbourhoods over the past month. On Saturday, the matter was discussed at the police station for resolution. Later that night, six attackers on three motorcycles threw two petrol bombs at my house and also targeted two nearby houses. Fortunately, the fire was quickly controlled, preventing any damage.”

Sirajganj Sadar police station OIC, Shahidul Islam, confirmed that police visited both sites immediately and are collecting CCTV footage from surrounding areas to identify the perpetrators. No written complaints had been lodged as of Sunday afternoon.
