In a dramatic anti-terror operation in Faridpur, members of the Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) successfully neutralised a powerful bomb recovered from the Ashimuzzaman Bridge. The device, a remote-controlled improvised explosive device (IED), was safely detonated on Sunday, 11 January, at 10:00 am using specialised containment measures involving sandbags.
According to ATU Inspector Shankar Kumar Ghosh, the bomb was highly potent and capable of causing extensive damage if detonated in the city. The controlled explosion took place on the banks of the Kumar River in the Gopalchamt area, ensuring no risk to the public. “Had the device exploded in its original location on the bridge, it could have caused significant casualties and structural damage. The blast was projected to rise approximately 15 feet,” he added.
The device was initially recovered on Saturday, 10 January, at 12:30 pm from under Alipur Bridge along the Kumar River. Intelligence had indicated that a haystack placed on the bridge contained a dangerous device. In response, the army cordoned off the area early in the morning, and a coordinated operation was conducted by the police, army, and other law enforcement agencies. During the search, a schoolbag concealed inside the haystack was discovered.
Upon inspection, the bag contained a taped and patched explosive device, which was immediately secured and relocated to the riverbank using sandbags to prevent any accidental detonation. Authorities emphasised that the device would not be touched until expert teams had confirmed it was fully neutralised. Local residents were kept at a safe distance, and heightened security measures were maintained in the surrounding area throughout the operation.
ATU Inspector Shankar Saha described the device as “extremely lethal and sophisticated, powered by a remote control and connected to its own power supply. It posed a direct threat to life and property in Faridpur and the surrounding district.” The swift and coordinated response by the ATU and allied forces successfully prevented any harm to civilians.
