From today, enrolment opens for ACA insurance.

VIENNA — Residents seeking affordable health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) have an opportunity today to receive hands-on guidance, as a dedicated enrolment session is being held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Vienna Public Library. The event comes at a critical moment, with millions of Americans facing uncertainty over health insurance costs amid ongoing debate in Congress about the future of enhanced federal subsidies.

The session is being organised with the support of West Virginia Navigator, a federally funded, non-profit organisation that specialises in helping individuals and families understand their health coverage options. Trained navigators will be on site to assist residents in comparing plans, determining eligibility for financial assistance, and completing enrolment applications.

Jeremy Smith, programme director for West Virginia Navigator, said the initiative aims to ensure that people do not miss out on coverage simply because the process feels complex or overwhelming. He confirmed that the deadline to enrol in an ACA marketplace plan is Thursday, making today’s event especially timely.

Although the original ACA subsidies introduced during the Obama administration remain in place, the enhanced subsidies approved under President Joe Biden expired on 1 January and are still under debate in Congress. These additional subsidies significantly reduced monthly premiums for many low- and middle-income households.

“These enhanced subsidies are the ones currently on the chopping block,” Smith explained, noting that their potential extension has become a major point of contention between Democrats and Republicans in both chambers of Congress.

According to estimates from policy research organisations, more than 20 million Americans could see noticeable premium increases if the enhanced subsidies are not reinstated. Studies also suggest that around 5 million people nationwide may drop their coverage altogether. In West Virginia alone, approximately 60,000 residents currently rely on ACA marketplace plans and benefit directly from premium subsidies.

Since the enhanced subsidies expired, navigators have observed a growing trend of families switching to cheaper plans with higher deductibles, or abandoning coverage entirely. Despite this, Smith stressed the importance of reviewing available options.

“We’re still encouraging everyone to at least look for a suitable plan,” he said, adding that many people are surprised to discover how affordable coverage can be.

West Virginia Navigator also provides free assistance beyond today’s event, offering both in-person and telephone support for residents of West Virginia and Ohio. Individuals who are not eligible for Medicare, Medicaid, or employer-sponsored insurance may qualify for ACA coverage.

Notably, the organisation reports that four in five enrollees can find a plan costing less than $21 per month, depending on income and household size.
