The Life Insurance Association of Japan (LIAJ) has outlined three strategic priorities for the nation’s life insurance sector in 2026, aiming to strengthen public trust, support societal sustainability, and enhance public understanding of the industry’s role. The announcement came in a New Year message from LIAJ Chairperson Yukinori Takada, who emphasised the sector’s enduring mission amid Japan’s unique demographic and environmental challenges.
“It is indeed the time for the life insurance industry, which has long provided preparation and security for the future, to fulfil its mission,” Mr Takada said. He highlighted the sector’s critical role as Japan faces an ageing population, declining birth rates, and increasing frequency of natural disasters.
The first priority, customer-oriented operations, focuses on advancing initiatives that put clients’ interests at the forefront. Key measures include enhancing compliance and risk management in direct sales channels, while also supporting independent insurance agencies in adhering to the Insurance Business Act. “Our goal is to ensure that customers can fully trust the industry and feel confident in the protection it provides,” Mr Takada explained.
The second priority, supporting a sustainable society, seeks to promote a “better co-existing future” through social responsibility programmes. These include hosting symposia on well-being, publishing reports on unconscious bias, and fostering female leadership across member companies. Such initiatives reflect the industry’s commitment to inclusivity, equality, and the long-term welfare of society.
The third priority, improving public understanding, aims to enhance transparency and awareness of the industry’s operations. This involves highlighting the work of insurance sales professionals and publishing historical materials that document the industry’s evolution alongside Japan’s major social and economic events. “Earning the public’s wide understanding of our diverse activities is vital for maintaining trust and credibility,” Mr Takada stated.
