Tension erupted at Sylhet’s M A G Osmani Medical College Hospital on Friday night following an attack on a trainee doctor and allegations of medical negligence. The incident took place around midnight in Ward 6 on the hospital’s fourth floor, prompting trainee doctors to stage a work stoppage demanding enhanced security and strict punishment for those responsible.
According to hospital sources, the altercation began when relatives of a patient expressed frustration over what they perceived as inadequate medical attention. Initially, they engaged in verbal disputes with ward nurses, but the situation rapidly escalated. A group of relatives allegedly began vandalising the ward, assaulting both the trainee doctor and other medical support staff. One female trainee doctor was reportedly harassed, while three ward boys sustained injuries. The disturbance caused significant panic throughout the hospital premises.
Upon receiving the report, the on-duty trainee doctors intervened and apprehended three individuals involved in the attack, including one woman. The police later took the three into custody for further investigation. The commotion drew additional trainee doctors to the scene, temporarily heightening tensions in the hospital.
