Usain Bolt steps into cricket: A comeback story

Nine years after retiring from professional track and field, the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, has hinted at a potential return to competitive sports—but this time on the cricket pitch. The Jamaican sprint legend, who boasts eight Olympic gold medals, revealed that he could step onto the cricket field if the opportunity arises.

Bolt, who once dreamt of becoming a fast bowler, said that cricket has always held a special place in his heart. However, his high school cricket coach advised him to explore track and field, a decision that eventually shaped him into an athletics icon.

Cricket is set to make a comeback at the Los Angeles Olympics after a hiatus of 128 years, with a Jamaican team expected to participate. Bolt stated that if the national selectors were to call him, he would be more than ready to answer the invitation.

Speaking to Esquire ahead of the Doha Marathon, Bolt said, “I retired from professional sports with great joy. I haven’t played cricket seriously for many years, but if the call comes, I am ready to play.”

Earlier, during a promotional event in India, Bolt admitted that had he not pursued sprinting, cricket would have been his sport of choice. The 39-year-old former sprinter said, “I definitely would have been a cricketer. Yes, I think if my cricket coach hadn’t said, ‘Look, you should try running,’ I might have stayed in cricket. My father was a huge cricket fan, and growing up, that was all I knew. I also played a bit of football, but my heart was always with cricket.”

Bolt’s speed naturally made him a prospective fast bowler. “I was a fast bowler, and my coach saw me running and asked, ‘Why don’t you try track and field?’ I gave it a shot, and I did very well. I had talent, and I ran with it,” he recalled.

Even today, the legendary Bolt still holds the world records in the 100 metres, 200 metres, and the 4×100 metres relay. His unrivalled speed remains unmatched decades later.

Event World Record Year Set Location
100 metres 9.58 seconds 2009 Berlin, Germany
200 metres 19.19 seconds 2009 Berlin, Germany
4×100 metres relay 36.84 seconds 2012 London, UK

Bolt’s possible cricket comeback may be more than a nostalgic fantasy; it reflects his enduring love for sports and his willingness to embrace new challenges, even beyond the track.
