Abul Kalam Azad, a fugitive convicted and sentenced to death for crimes against humanity, has surrendered to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh. He appeared before the tribunal on Wednesday morning, 21 January 2026, ending years of evasion.
Azad had previously petitioned the Ministry of Home Affairs last year to stay his sentence under Section 401 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, citing procedural grounds. However, until his surrender, he remained absconding since the tribunal’s verdict was announced on 21 January 2013 by ICT-2, then chaired by Justice Obaidul Hassan.
During the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, Azad faced eight separate charges of crimes against humanity. Of these, seven were proven in court, while one charge was dismissed. He was sentenced to death for three offences and imprisonment for four others; however, the execution of the death penalty rendered the separate prison sentences redundant.
The tribunal found Azad directly involved in multiple atrocities, including the killing of 14 individuals, the rape of three women, the abduction of nine people, illegal detention of ten persons, arson at five homes, and looting of property from fifteen households.
This verdict marked a historic milestone as the first final conviction for war crimes under the International Crimes Tribunal framework. At the time of the original ruling, Azad had fled, reportedly travelling via India to Pakistan before arrest warrants could be enforced.
The tribunal concluded its judicial proceedings on 26 December 2012, after both prosecution and defence presented their arguments. The case was then kept pending for verdict (CAV) until the final judgment was announced.
Azad’s surrender today allows the tribunal to enforce its previous ruling and move forward with the legal formalities, bringing closure to a long-pending case that has drawn significant national attention. Law enforcement agencies have confirmed that he will now face the sentence originally handed down more than a decade ago.
