A Dhaka court has granted a two-day police remand for Kamrul Hasan Ripon, president of the Dhaka Metropolitan South unit of the Swechchhasebak League, an organisation whose activities have been officially banned, in connection with a high-profile murder case filed at Jatrabari police station. The order was issued on Thursday by Metropolitan Magistrate Jamsed Alam following a contested remand hearing.
The case stems from violence linked to the July mass uprising, an episode that continues to cast a long shadow over Bangladesh’s political and legal landscape. Police had sought a seven-day remand, arguing that custodial interrogation was essential to uncover the planning behind the attack, identify other individuals allegedly involved, and trace the source of firearms used during the incident. However, after hearing arguments from both sides, the court allowed only a two-day remand, balancing investigative needs with legal safeguards.
Public Prosecutor Anwar Hossain told the court that Kamrul was produced before the magistrate shortly after 1:00 pm. Defence lawyers opposed the remand request, contending that their client was being subjected to unnecessary harassment and that sufficient information could be obtained without custodial interrogation. The prosecution, however, maintained that the gravity of the offence and its wider implications justified remand. Upon conclusion of the hearing, the magistrate delivered the ruling granting limited police custody.
According to court and police records, Kamrul Hasan Ripon was detained on the night of 19 January after being apprehended by members of the public in the Bhatara area of the capital and subsequently handed over to Bhatara police station. He was produced before the court on 20 January, when investigators formally sought remand in the Jatrabari murder case. On that day, the court ordered that he be sent to jail custody and fixed 22 January for the remand hearing. The remand application was filed by the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Md Rasel Sardar of Jatrabari police station.
The prosecution’s case alleges that on 5 August 2024, at around 1:30 pm, students and members of the public brought out a procession towards Shahbagh. When the march reached the Jatrabari area, it was allegedly attacked without warning. During the violence, a man identified as Din Islam was shot and later died from his injuries. The incident triggered widespread tension in the area and prompted a prolonged investigation amid competing political narratives.
Following months of inquiry, a murder case was formally filed at Jatrabari police station on 20 February last year. Investigators believe the case may involve multiple suspects and have indicated that further arrests could follow depending on information obtained during remand.
