Bangladesh will not be participating in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, a decision that has sparked widespread discussion among former players and cricket observers. While the move has been welcomed by some, including former national football captain Aminul Haque, who prioritises the safety and honour of Bangladeshi athletes, he believes the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) could have exercised greater diplomatic skill to secure the team’s participation.
Speaking at an event yesterday, Aminul remarked, “The issue concerning Mustafizur Rahman could have been resolved through dialogue with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and stakeholders involved in the IPL. Had such discussions taken place, Bangladesh would not have faced the situation of withdrawing from the World Cup. In this instance, the cricket board has demonstrated a lack of foresight.”
Aminul emphasised that the country’s safety and honour must come first. “We fully support measures that prioritise the nation’s security and dignity,” he said. “However, cricket is not only a national tradition but also tied to our country’s international reputation. In this context, the board could have acted more strategically.”
He further explained that sustained dialogue with the BCCI and the International Cricket Council (ICC) might have offered a solution. “Ignoring these channels and making decisions unilaterally has deprived our players of the opportunity to compete on the world stage. We must reflect on whose negligence or lack of awareness has caused Bangladesh to miss out, and whether a resolution was possible.”
In parallel developments, the BCB has initiated efforts to reintegrate cricketing legend Shakib Al Hasan into the national squad. Aminul stressed that while the return of such a prominent player is desirable, it must adhere to legal and procedural frameworks that respect state authority. “The BCB cannot act alone in this matter,” he added.
Aminul also criticised the role of former Youth and Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, alleging that his inexperience had undermined the cricket board. “The advisor’s direct interventions have tarnished the board’s reputation and harmed national cricket. The current president appears to be operating along similar lines, following the advisor’s guidance,” he noted.
