Obscene Remarks Against Woman, Jamaat Leader Threatens to Tear Out Tongue

Dhaka, 26 January: Students at Dhaka University have strongly condemned offensive remarks made by Borguna Jamaat leader Md. Shamim Ahsan regarding female students and the university’s central student council (DUCSU). The protest, which erupted near the Raju Sculpture at 9 pm on Sunday, saw demonstrators vocally demanding accountability, with some warning that the leader’s tongue “should be torn out” for his derogatory statements.

Earlier, Md. Shamim Ahsan had described DUCSU as “once a den of prostitutes and drug peddlers,” prompting outrage across the campus community.

At the protest, female students criticised the Jamaat leader for branding Dhaka University women as prostitutes. One student stated:

“He called the women of my country prostitutes. The women of Dhaka University, prostitutes? Someone who dares to say this deserves their tongue torn out.”

The demonstrators also voiced frustration at the perceived inaction of DUCSU leadership. One participant remarked:

“DUCSU claims organisational activity, but all they do is host flashy events. There is nothing more shameful. When our female peers are insulted right beside them, there is no protest. How can DUCSU leaders continue to hold office with such shame?”

Students also criticised DUCSU representatives for allegedly neglecting campus duties while campaigning in remote areas for Jamaat’s electoral ambitions.

This incident follows the burning of an effigy of Borguna district Jamaat’s assistant secretary, Md. Shamim Ahsan. The Dhaka University administration earlier issued a statement denouncing his remarks as “obscene, vulgar and antiquated.”

The university’s statement emphasised:

“These comments have gravely tarnished the dignity, reputation and heritage of Dhaka University. The authorities call for an immediate retraction and an apology from Md. Shamim Ahsan.”
