In anticipation of the forthcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has stepped up security measures across the capital and two additional districts to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful voting process. From Thursday, 29 January, personnel from five battalions under the Dhaka sector will begin operational duties in the field, focusing on law enforcement and voter safety during the election period.
Lieutenant Colonel Taimur Hasan, Battalion Commander of the Dhaka Sector, confirmed the deployment during a press briefing on Wednesday afternoon at the training ground of the BGB Headquarters in Pilkhana, Dhaka.
A total of 38 BGB platoons will be deployed across key constituencies under the Dhaka sector. The breakdown of the deployment is as follows:
| District / Area | Number of Constituencies | Platoons Deployed |
|---|---|---|
| Dhaka North City Corporation | 5 | 11 |
| Savar and Dhamrai | 2 | 6 |
| Faridpur | 4 | 13 |
| Manikganj | 3 | 8 |
| Total | 14 | 38 |
Security measures include the establishment of checkpoints at strategic locations, particularly at entry points to the capital and other sensitive areas, reinforced with modern surveillance technology. In addition, specialised BGB K-9 dog squads will be deployed to enhance security operations.
For rapid response to any emergency, the BGB has made ready its Rapid Action Team (RAT), Quick Response Force (QRF), and, if necessary, helicopters. This election, personnel will utilise body-worn cameras, night vision devices, armoured personnel carriers (APCs), and advanced signalling equipment. A monitoring cell at battalion headquarters has been set up for continuous oversight of the situation.
Lieutenant Colonel Hasan emphasised that the BGB will enter polling stations only when requested by presiding officers or in the event of violence or suspected electoral fraud, in accordance with directives from the Election Commission.
Officials expressed optimism that, through the combined efforts of the government, the Election Commission, and citizens, the 13th parliamentary election will be conducted in a peaceful, orderly, and celebratory environment.
