The 14-time Grammy Award winner Lady Gaga has utilised her global platform to deliver a searing indictment of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), specifically highlighting the escalating violence in Minnesota. Performing at the Tokyo Dome on 29 January 2026, the pop icon paused her Mayhem Ball Tour to address the political crisis currently unfolding across the Atlantic.
Seated at her piano, “Mother Monster” transitioned from her high-octane setlist to a sombre, heartfelt monologue. “In a couple of days, I’m heading home, and my heart is aching thinking about the people, the children, and the families who are being mercilessly targeted,” Gaga told the capacity crowd. She expressed a particular affinity for the communities in Minneapolis, which have become the flashpoint of a national outcry following a series of fatal enforcement operations.
The singer’s comments come at a time of unprecedented civil unrest in the United States. Since the Trump administration intensified deportation efforts in 2025, Minnesota has seen a surge in aggressive ICE activity. Gaga’s rhetoric focused on the psychological toll of these operations, stating, “When entire communities lose their sense of safety and belonging, it breaks something in all of us.”
The situation in Minneapolis reached a fever pitch this month following the deaths of two individuals, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, both of whom were fatally shot by ICE officers. While the administration maintains that the officers acted in self-defence, eyewitness footage has surfaced that appears to contradict the official narrative, sparking protests from the streets of the Midwest to the stages of Tokyo.
Gaga is the latest in a string of high-profile artists to voice opposition to the current immigration policies.
| Artist | Public Statement / Action |
|---|---|
| Lady Gaga | Condemned ICE at Tokyo Dome; called for “accountability and mercy.” |
| Billie Eilish | Denounced “neighbourhood kidnappings” at the 2026 MLK Jr. Awards. |
| Olivia Rodrigo | Labelled ICE’s recent actions as “unconscionable” via social media. |
| The Administration | Defended the actions as “self-defence” despite video evidence. |
Despite the gravity of her message, Gaga’s professional momentum remains unstoppable. After one final show in Japan, she is expected to return to the United States just in time for the 2026 Grammy Awards on 1 February. She is currently a frontrunner for seven awards, largely due to the dual success of her chart-topping album MAYHEM and her work on the Harlequin companion album.
Furthermore, Gaga is set to feature prominently during the upcoming Super Bowl weekend. She recently unveiled a poignant cover of “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”, originally by Mister Rogers, for a major commercial campaign. In a behind-the-scenes clip, she reflected on the song’s relevance, noting that the message of communal kindness is “powerful to think about” during such a fractured political moment.
