Comments on Butler’s Asian Cup squad

Bangladesh is gearing up for its maiden appearance in the Women’s Asian Cup this coming March, marking a historic opportunity to dream of World Cup and Olympic participation. Last Wednesday, the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) announced a preliminary squad of 29 players for the tournament, with the training camp having commenced a day earlier.

Notably absent from the camp is head coach Peter Butler, who is currently in Nepal with the Under-19 team. This decision, coupled with the continued exclusion of several prominent players—including Sabina Khatun, who had previously led a revolt in January—has sparked questions and debate among fans and pundits alike.

Addressing the controversy on Thursday, the British coach explained his rationale. “It was not possible to organise an overseas training camp, which is crucial for our preparation. Therefore, I am using this time to evaluate the current squad over a seven-day period while also observing the Under-19 team in Nepal,” Butler said. He added that a few exceptionally talented young players from the Under-19 side are being considered for the Asian Cup squad.

On the topic of missing an international camp, Butler expressed disappointment but remained optimistic. “It is unfortunate that we could not arrange a camp abroad. Nevertheless, we are moving forward with positivity and enthusiasm,” he stated.

The preliminary squad notably excludes five players, including Sabina Khatun, despite recent calls to include them after their teams triumphed in the SAFF Women’s Championship. Many had argued that these players should have been invited to the camp for trials, but Butler maintained his stance.

Clarifying the situation, the head coach emphasised, “I want to make one thing clear: I have not yet announced the final squad. Every player still has an opportunity. We have currently formed a preliminary training group, and some players’ participation is uncertain due to injuries sustained in league matches.”

Bangladesh has been placed in Group B for the Asian Cup. According to the schedule, the team will face China on 3 March, North Korea on 6 March, and Uzbekistan on 9 March.

6 March North Korea TBD

With the final squad yet to be confirmed, anticipation is high, and fans are closely following Butler’s selection process as Bangladesh prepares to make its mark on the continental stage.
