In a thrilling West London derby, Chelsea secured a remarkable comeback to defeat West Ham United 3-2 at Stamford Bridge, despite trailing by two goals. The late winner propelled the Blues into fourth place in the Premier League standings, highlighting the resurgence of Liam Rosenior’s side.
The match began in West Ham’s favour, with Chelsea’s defence under immediate pressure. In the seventh minute, goalkeeper Robert Sánchez struggled to deal with a curling cross from Jarrod Bowen, allowing the visitors to take an early lead. The first-half dominance continued as Crisençio Somerville scored a stunning strike from inside the box in the 36th minute, leaving Chelsea 2-0 down at the interval.
Chelsea’s attacking threat in the opening 45 minutes was limited, with only a free-kick from Cole Palmer offering a moment of note. The home supporters voiced their frustration audibly during the break. Rosenior responded decisively, making three tactical substitutions that completely shifted the momentum of the contest.
The comeback began in the 57th minute when João Pedro met a cross from Wesley Fofana with a header, reducing the deficit to 2-1. Thirteen minutes later, Marc Cucurella scored with a precise header to level the score, sending Stamford Bridge into raptures. The dramatic turnaround was completed in the 92nd minute when captain Enzo Fernández converted another João Pedro cross, securing a memorable victory for Chelsea.
The match ended in controversy, however, as a VAR review saw Jean-Clair Todibo shown a straight red card for strangling João Pedro in the dying moments.
Chelsea’s win marks their third consecutive league victory and their fifth straight win in all competitions under Rosenior. With 24 matches played, the Blues have accumulated 40 points, climbing above Manchester United, who sit fifth with 39 points from the same number of games. West Ham, by contrast, remain in 18th place with 20 points.
Meanwhile, Liverpool breathed new life into their season with a commanding 4-1 victory over Newcastle at Anfield. Despite Newcastle taking an early lead through Gordon in the 36th minute, Liverpool responded with two goals from Hugo Ekitike before the interval. Floran Ritz added a third goal in the 67th minute, and Ibrahima Konaté completed the scoring in stoppage time. Returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, Mohamed Salah provided an assist in the victory, contributing to Liverpool’s rise to fifth in the table.
