The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has announced the launch of a dedicated hotline service to receive information and complaints relating to the forthcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election and the accompanying referendum. The initiative is intended to ensure that citizens can promptly and easily report any irregularities, misconduct or activities that may undermine the integrity of the electoral process.
The special hotline became operational on Monday, 2 February, as part of the DMP’s broader preparations to maintain law and order before, during and after polling. Through these mobile-based contact numbers, voters, candidates, election observers and other stakeholders will be able to convey election-related information directly to the police, enabling swift assessment and, where necessary, immediate intervention.
Speaking on the matter, DMP Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Talebur Rahman urged city residents to make responsible use of the hotline service. He stated that citizens are encouraged to contact the police if they observe violations of the electoral code of conduct or any actions that could unlawfully influence the election or referendum. According to him, timely reporting is crucial in preventing minor incidents from escalating into larger disturbances.
The DMP emphasised that the hotline is not limited to reporting overt acts of violence or intimidation. It may also be used to inform the police about misuse of money or influence, unauthorised campaigning, obstruction of voters, dissemination of false information, or any other behaviour that contravenes election laws and regulations. Information received through the hotline will be reviewed by designated police officers, and appropriate measures will be taken in accordance with the law.
In a statement, the DMP reiterated its commitment to facilitating a free, fair and impartial election in the capital. Maintaining public confidence in the electoral process, the police noted, depends not only on enforcement by law enforcement agencies but also on the active cooperation of the public. The authorities therefore called upon residents of Dhaka to remain vigilant, law-abiding and cooperative throughout the election period.
To clarify the scope of the hotline service, the DMP outlined its intended uses as follows:
| Purpose of Contact | Examples of Issues to Report | Expected Police Response |
|---|---|---|
| Code of conduct violations | Illegal campaigning, use of force or threats | Verification and legal action |
| Election interference | Voter obstruction, undue influence | Immediate intervention |
| Public order concerns | Rallies causing disorder, clashes | Deployment of police units |
| General information | Suspicious activities near polling centres | Monitoring and follow-up |
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police concluded by expressing hope that, with the cooperation of the city’s residents and the effective use of the hotline, the upcoming election and referendum can be conducted peacefully, transparently and in a manner that reflects the will of the people.
