Country Shaken Again by Morning and Night Quakes

Bangladesh experienced two tremors on Tuesday (3 February), leaving residents across multiple regions startled. The first earthquake struck in the early hours of the morning, followed by another during the night, highlighting the country’s vulnerability to seismic activity.

Nighttime Earthquake:
At 9:40 pm, a tremor was felt in several parts of Bangladesh. Initial reports indicate that the epicentre of this earthquake was located in Myanmar. The quake was felt in the capital Dhaka as well as in Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, and other districts. The depth and exact magnitude of this nighttime tremor are yet to be confirmed, with authorities monitoring the situation closely to assess any potential risk or damage.

Morning Earthquake:
Earlier, at 4:36 am, Bangladesh was struck by a mild earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was identified in Kalaroa, Satkhira, approximately 175 kilometres south-west of Dhaka. Geographically, the tremor’s coordinates were 22.84° North latitude and 89.01° East longitude. According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the earthquake originated at a depth of 150 kilometres. The surrounding areas, including Satkhira, Khulna, and Jashore, experienced noticeable shaking, though no casualties or property damage were reported.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and India’s National Centre for Seismology (NCS) corroborated the occurrence of the morning quake, classifying it as “mild” in intensity. Residents reported feeling the tremor for several seconds, causing temporary alarm but no significant disruption.

The following table summarises the key details of both earthquakes:

Time (3 February) Epicentre Magnitude (Richter) Depth Affected Areas
04:36 am Kalaroa, Satkhira 4.1 150 km Satkhira, Khulna, Jashore, surrounding areas
21:40 pm Myanmar Unknown Unknown Dhaka, Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, other districts

Authorities have emphasised that there have been no reports of injuries or damage from either tremor. However, monitoring remains ongoing, with seismic experts advising residents to remain alert for any potential aftershocks.

Officials have assured the public that updated information regarding the magnitude, depth, and epicentre of the nighttime quake will be released as soon as it is available. Meanwhile, citizens in earthquake-prone regions are being urged to follow safety precautions, including staying in structurally secure locations and keeping emergency supplies at hand.

Experts also highlight the importance of preparedness in vulnerable areas, recommending that building standards be maintained to withstand mild to moderate seismic activity. These recent tremors serve as a reminder of the country’s susceptibility to earthquakes originating both within and beyond its borders.
