Gajipur, Bangladesh — The industrial city of Gajipur experienced severe traffic congestion on two of its major highways on Tuesday, as commuters rushed home following the announcement of a four-day public holiday in observance of the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election. The gridlock stretched over approximately 50 kilometres along the Dhaka–Tangail and Dhaka–Mymensingh highways. Reports have also surfaced of transport operators charging triple the usual fares during the rush.
Commuters described chaotic scenes on Tuesday morning (10 February), particularly along the Dhaka–Mymensingh route, where the jam extended from Tongi College Gate to Maona Chourasta, and on the Dhaka–Tangail highway, from Bhogra in Gajipur to the Kaliakoir Bypass.
Many passengers voiced frustration as fares soared disproportionately. Journeys that normally cost 500 BDT were being demanded at 1,200–1,500 BDT. In protest, some travellers temporarily blocked traffic at Chandna Chourasta and Maona areas.
The congestion was triggered when over 400 factories across Gajipur declared closures from Monday afternoon (9 February). This prompted a massive exodus of workers and residents towards their hometowns. The Chandra Bus Terminal, a major entry point for 26 northern districts, saw unprecedented crowds as passengers queued overnight for buses, trucks, pickups, and other vehicles.
Law enforcement officials have been actively deployed along the congested stretches to manage traffic and ensure smooth flow.

Gajipur Nawazpur Highway Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge noted that the factory shutdowns related to the election were the main reason for the highway gridlock. “Our officers are working continuously to maintain normal traffic conditions. However, some passengers have protested against exorbitant fares. We are monitoring the situation closely and will take strict action against operators found charging excessively,” he said.
Authorities continue to urge commuters to remain patient and cooperate with police personnel deployed at Chandna Chourasta, Bhogra Bypass, and other key points along the highways.
