“After the election victory, Bangladesh Bank removed all obstacles in mobile banking.”

Dhaka, 13 February 2026 – Bangladesh Bank has officially lifted the temporary restrictions on mobile financial services (MFS) including bKash, Nagad, and Rocket, following the conclusion of the national parliamentary elections. The four-day curbs, which were imposed from midnight on 9 February until 12 February, were intended to prevent the potential misuse of funds during the electoral period.

During the restriction period, person-to-person (P2P) transactions were significantly limited. Each transfer was capped at Tk1,000, with a maximum of 10 transactions per day per user. Notably, merchant payments and utility bill settlements were unaffected, allowing essential financial activities to continue uninterrupted.

“These measures were temporary and precautionary,” a Bangladesh Bank official said. “Now that the elections have concluded peacefully, we have restored full functionality for all MFS users.”

The temporary measures also included a suspension of P2P transactions via internet banking through the National Payment Switch Bangladesh (NPSB). This caused considerable inconvenience for many users who relied on digital transfers for urgent payments and personal transactions. With the removal of these restrictions, customers can once again conduct P2P transfers, bill payments, and merchant transactions without limitation.

Mobile Financial Service Transaction Limits During Election

Service Type Transaction Cap Daily Limit Status During Restriction Current Status
MFS P2P Tk1,000 10 Limited Fully Restored
Internet Banking P2P Suspended N/A Suspended Fully Restored
Merchant Payments No Limit No Limit Active Fully Restored
Utility Bill Payments No Limit No Limit Active Fully Restored

Sources from Bangladesh Bank confirmed that the temporary measures were reviewed after the stipulated 96-hour period and deemed no longer necessary. The central bank emphasised that the resumption of normal operations would ensure smooth financial transactions for both individuals and businesses across the country.

The removal of restrictions marks a return to normalcy in Bangladesh’s digital payment ecosystem, allowing millions of users to send and receive money freely once again. Experts noted that the brief curbs were part of a broader strategy to ensure electoral integrity without disrupting critical financial services.
