The Nepal national cricket team, which earned plaudits on the world stage during the last T20 World Cup while competing against formidable sides such as Bangladesh and South Africa, is currently facing significant challenges in the ongoing tournament. While flashes of their potential have occasionally shone through, a resurgent Italy inflicted a heavy ten-wicket defeat, leaving Nepal at the bottom of their group.
Following two successive defeats, Nepal’s head coach, Stuart Law, has issued a firm directive for players to refrain from social media use. Law emphasised that the team’s immediate focus must be on performance analysis, warning that online commentary and public opinion could act as a major distraction.
“Step away from social media for a few days,” Law instructed. “Our priority now is to identify the gaps in our performance against teams like England and Italy.”
Law elaborated on social media’s dual impact, which is deeply embedded in Nepali cricket culture. “It is immensely influential in society, but it can also mislead players. Those who spend excessive time online pursuing popularity, endorsements, or sponsorships may neglect team strategies, peer guidance, and their own performance.”
Acknowledging the social and commercial advantages of online engagement, Law stressed that cricket remains paramount. “Strong performances on the field naturally bring recognition. Consistent victories reduce the need for unnecessary online promotion.”
He added, “I may appear like a ‘dinosaur’ in this social media era, but my aim is to help players maintain balance. Off-field activities are acceptable, but on the field, their focus must be entirely on cricket. Everything else only creates distraction and confusion.”
Nepal’s recent T20 World Cup match summary:
| Match No | Opponent | Result | Margin | Group Position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | England | Loss | 4 runs | Group C, 3rd |
| 2 | Italy | Loss | 10 wickets | Group C, Bottom |
| 3 | West Indies | Pending | — | Group C, Bottom |
Law’s directive is aimed at enhancing the team’s mental stability and fostering collective focus. By limiting social media exposure, Nepal’s cricketers can concentrate on delivering peak performance on the field, laying the groundwork for surprising results and unexpected success in future international tournaments.
