The iconic Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban is undergoing final preparations to welcome newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs), as Bangladesh stands on the threshold of its 13th parliamentary term. Officials confirmed that extensive arrangements are under way at the South Plaza, where both the swearing-in of MPs and the oath-taking ceremony of the new cabinet will be held on Tuesday.
According to senior government sources, the oath ceremony for the MPs will take place at 10:00 a.m. at the South Plaza. Later the same day, at 4:00 p.m., the new Council of Ministers, led by Tarique Rahman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), is scheduled to be sworn in at the same venue.
Officials from the Parliament Secretariat and the Cabinet Division have been working since Saturday—two days after the election—to ensure the smooth conduct of the ceremonies. Cleaning and refurbishment efforts are ongoing inside the main complex, while the offices allocated to MPs are being readied with necessary furnishings and logistical support.
Sources within the Secretariat said that parts of the complex which sustained damage during the recent mass uprising are also being repaired. Security, seating arrangements, media facilities and protocol services are being coordinated to accommodate dignitaries, diplomats and party leaders expected to attend.
Kaniz Mowla, Secretary of the National Parliament Secretariat, told the media that all arrangements are being finalised at the South Plaza to ensure a seamless transition to the new legislature and government.
Under the Constitution of Bangladesh, elected members must take their oath within three days of the publication of the official gazette. On Friday night, the Bangladesh Election Commission published the gazette notification for 297 of the 299 parliamentary constituencies contested in the 13th general election.
The election results delivered a decisive mandate:
| Political Party / Alliance | Seats Won | Position |
|---|---|---|
| Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) | 209 | Majority |
| 11-Party Alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami | 77 | Opposition |
| Independent Candidates | 11 | Others |
| Total (Gazetted) | 297 | — |
The BNP secured 209 seats, achieving an absolute majority in the 300-seat Jatiya Sangsad. Meanwhile, the 11-party alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, once an ally of the BNP, won 77 seats and is poised to occupy the opposition benches. Independent candidates claimed the remaining seats among those gazetted.
The forthcoming oath ceremonies mark the formal commencement of Bangladesh’s new parliamentary chapter, with attention now turning to the formation of the cabinet and the legislative priorities that will define the government’s term.
