Experts suggest this record may remain unbroken for decades, given the rarity of such long-standing partnerships in modern football.

Their partnership began on 13 September 2008, when Messi and Gerard Piqué featured in Busquets’ debut match for Barcelona. Over the course of their careers, Messi and Busquets have shared the pitch in 569 matches for Barcelona and 84 matches for Inter Miami, forming a formidable midfield and defensive partnership that has been central to both clubs’ successes.

Interestingly, Busquets also features prominently in the second-highest tally of matches played alongside a teammate. He has lined up with Spanish compatriot Piqué in 620 matches, comprising 533 matches for Barcelona and 87 appearances for the Spanish national team.

Pairs exceeding 600 matches together in professional football are extremely rare. Recently, Bayern Munich stars Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller joined this elite list, having played 611 matches together for the German club.

Although Messi and Busquets are not currently playing for the same club, both remain active in professional football. While the possibility of them reuniting at a future club exists, it is considered highly unlikely. For now, their record is expected to stand for an extended period.

It is important to note that the IFFHS figures only include top-tier competitive matches in which both players took the field. Friendly matches, unofficial tournaments, or training appearances are not counted.
