New Holiday Schedule Announced for Schools

The Government has issued the revised holiday schedule for the 2026 academic year for all public and private educational institutions across the country. The announcement, made through official notifications from the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education and the Ministry of Education, covers primary, secondary, and lower-secondary schools. The schedule includes closures for religious festivals such as Ramadan and Eid, as well as national observances including Independence Day.

The holidays will commence on Thursday, 19 February, and continue through Thursday, 26 March. Since 26 March falls on a Thursday, teachers and staff will be able to extend their leave until Saturday, 28 March. These dates include the regular weekend closures on Saturdays and Sundays.

The notifications, released on Tuesday evening, provide both the official holiday list and the academic calendar. According to the directives, all primary schools will remain closed for a total of 26 days from 19 February to 26 March, covering Ramadan, Eid, and other designated holidays. Secondary and lower-secondary schools will follow the same schedule.

The Ministry has emphasised that schools cannot be closed for administrative inspections, official visits, or ceremonial purposes. Students should not be asked to remain outside the school premises during holidays. However, schools may remain open for enrolment processes or other essential activities as necessary. Special days, including 21 February (International Mother Language Day), 26 March (Independence Day), 16 December (Victory Day), and Bengali New Year, must be celebrated in all schools with appropriate ceremonies.

The full breakdown of holidays for the academic year is as follows:

School Level Reason for Holiday Dates Total Days
Primary Ramadan & Eid 19 February – 26 March 26
Secondary & Lower-Secondary Ramadan & Eid 19 February – 26 March 26
Primary Summer Vacation May 10
Primary Eid-ul-Azha May Included in 10-day summer vacation
Primary Winter Vacation & Christmas December 8
Primary Principal’s Reserved Leave Year-round 2

Excluding weekly weekends, the total number of holiday days for primary schools will reach 67.

The new schedule is intended to allow schools to plan their academic activities efficiently while ensuring that students can fully benefit from the designated holiday periods. School administrators are encouraged to adhere strictly to the official calendar to maintain consistency and fairness in holiday observances nationwide.
