Pep Guardiola’s joy was palpable at the Etihad Stadium last night, as Manchester City secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Newcastle United. The Spaniard embraced his coaching staff, raised a fist in triumph several times, and wore a broad smile that spoke volumes. This win was more than just three points—it was a statement in City’s relentless pursuit of the Premier League title.
City entered the match six points behind leaders Arsenal after 25 games. With their win over Newcastle and Arsenal dropping points in a draw against bottom-side Wolverhampton Wanderers last Thursday, the gap has now narrowed to just two points. Guardiola’s side is very much back in the title race, controlling the momentum at a critical stage of the season.
With 11 league games remaining, including a pivotal home clash against Arsenal, City are in a strong position. If they win all their remaining matches, the title could still be theirs. The same applies to Arsenal: if Mikel Arteta’s side wins all their remaining 11 fixtures, including their April visit to the Etihad, they would claim the championship. Currently, Arsenal top the table with 58 points from 27 games, with City trailing closely on 56 points.
The Newcastle match could easily have ended in a draw, had it not been for an extraordinary 95th-minute save from City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Earlier, City’s left-back Neco O’Reilly netted twice in the first half (14th and 27th minutes), while Newcastle’s Luis Hall had briefly equalised in the 22nd minute. Guardiola’s delight was so evident that he joked his players could enjoy a three-day break to “indulge in plenty of caipirinhas and daiquiris” before returning to training for their next clash against Leeds United.
Reflecting on the match, Guardiola said, “It was a massive victory. Newcastle are an incredible team with pace, power, and physicality in attack and midfield. The match was extremely tough, but our team was remarkable. We will face similar battles in the next 11 games—every game will be a fight.”
At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea drew 1-1 with Burnley despite taking an early lead. Pedro scored in the fourth minute, but Chelsea were reduced to ten men when centre-back Wesley Fofana received a second yellow card in the 72nd minute. Burnley’s striker Jean Fleming equalised in the 93rd minute. Chelsea, currently fourth, have accumulated 45 points from 27 matches. Notably, Chelsea players have received six red cards this season—the highest in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, James Milner made history in Brighton’s 2-0 victory at Brentford. Coming on as a substitute in the 90th minute, the 40-year-old full-back surpassed Gareth Barry’s 653 Premier League appearances, setting a new record at 654 matches. Milner has represented Leeds United, Newcastle United, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton. He has won three Premier League titles—twice with City and once with Liverpool—and scored 56 league goals, contributing 90 assists over his illustrious career.
