Online Insurance Scams Target Elderly Citizens

A 69-year-old retired Subedar from the Hisar Military Cantonment in Haryana has fallen victim to an elaborate online insurance scam, losing a total of ₹1,516,338. Local police sources confirmed that Karan Singh, who dedicated many years of service to the Indian Army, was deceived through a series of fraudulent communications. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and serves as a stark warning about the growing sophistication of scams targeting elderly citizens. The case is currently under investigation by the Cyber Crime Unit.

The Scam Unfolded

According to police reports, Karan Singh purchased a life insurance policy in 2010 for ₹800,000, which was scheduled to mature in 2020. However, he did not receive the full sum upon maturity. In September 2025, a woman contacted him by phone, claiming to be a representative of the insurance company, and informed him that a substantial amount, including accrued interest, was still due.

Shortly thereafter, a man posing as an official from another insurance firm continued the deception, asserting that the total amount payable with interest was ₹1,328,000. The fraudsters insisted that certain advance fees were required before the payout could be released. Trusting their claims, Karan Singh made multiple payments between October and November 2025.

No funds were ever released. Instead, the perpetrators repeatedly demanded additional amounts, at one stage claiming an extra ₹500,000. Karan Singh used his personal savings and borrowed money from neighbours to comply with these demands. The scam came to light when he shared the correspondence with his son, who immediately suspected fraud and filed a complaint via the National Cyber Crime Portal. Following preliminary verification, a formal case was registered and a police investigation commenced.

Cybercrime experts have cautioned that insurance-related scams frequently lure victims with promises of refunds or bonuses, only to demand fictitious fees later. Elderly and trusting individuals are particularly susceptible to such fraud.

Authorities have advised the public to verify all communications directly through official customer service channels and to report any suspicious calls or messages immediately to law enforcement.

This case underscores that as technology advances, fraudulent schemes are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Protecting elderly citizens requires heightened awareness at both family and community levels to prevent them from becoming victims of similar scams.
