Barishal – Some elements within the administration are reportedly providing covert support to mobsters, warned Md. Zahid Uddin Swapon, the Information Minister, during an event organised by the Barishal District Administration to mark International Mother Language Day and Shaheed Day.
Addressing the audience, the minister emphasised the critical role of a free and accountable media in sustaining democracy. “A country cannot uphold democratic values without independent media. Media cannot exercise its freedom without accountability,” he stated.
He further added, “Protesting against injustice alone is not enough. To achieve the society we aspire to, we must have a clear plan to build it.”
Swapon specifically pointed to attempts by certain quarters to shelter criminal elements. “We have observed that some groups try to provide patronage to mobsters. Even while holding key administrative positions, some officials secretly extend support to these elements. As a government, we are aware of all forms of information regarding such activities.”
The minister underscored the government’s commitment to transparency and public accountability. “The cabinet under Tarique Rahman’s leadership understands how governance should be conducted. If such issues exist within the administration, we will identify them and make the findings public through the media,” he said.
He concluded by reaffirming the government’s dedication to citizen accountability: “Answerability to the people is paramount. Our sole mission is to prepare Bangladesh for its citizens.”
Swapon also reflected on the experiences from the most recent national elections, highlighting challenges that affected the voting environment.
| Aspect | Observation | Government Response |
|---|---|---|
| Electoral Environment | Voting disrupted without valid reasons | Investigation to determine causes |
| Transparency | Some irregularities observed | Commitment to ensure impartiality |
| Future Preparedness | Need for free and fair elections | Measures being planned for electoral reforms |
“The recent national elections provided us with significant lessons. We noted that, for no justifiable reason, the voting environment was disrupted. To understand why this happened, we are initiating a formal inquiry,” he explained.
Swapon reiterated the government’s intention to guarantee future elections that are neutral, free, and fair, stressing that such measures are essential to maintaining public trust and democratic integrity.
