The first session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) of Bangladesh is scheduled to commence on 12 March 2026 at 11:00 am. The announcement was made on Monday through an official press release issued by the Public Relations Division of the Secretariat of the Jatiya Sangsad.
Acting under the powers conferred by Article 72(1) of the Constitution, the President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Mr. Sahabuddin, has formally summoned the new parliament. The directive was conveyed through a letter signed by Md. Emadul Haque, Director of Public Relations at the Parliament Secretariat.
According to parliamentary tradition and constitutional mandate, the inaugural day of a newly elected parliament carries significant formal obligations. Foremost among these is the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, without which the parliament cannot commence its official proceedings. Once these elections are concluded, the newly elected Speaker will preside over the first session, formally inaugurating the legislative term of the 13th Parliament.
The agenda of the first session is structured as follows:
| Time | Activity |
|---|---|
| 11:00 am | President officially summons the 13th Parliament |
| Morning | Election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker |
| Following elections | Formal inauguration of parliamentary proceedings by the Speaker |
| Subsequent | President delivers inaugural address highlighting government achievements and future plans |
| After the address | Members present a vote of thanks, followed by extended general discussion |
During his inaugural address, the President is expected to outline the government’s key achievements over the preceding term, including advancements in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and digitalisation. He will also set out strategic administrative and economic priorities for the year ahead, emphasising sustainable development, governance reforms, and fiscal consolidation.
Following the President’s speech, parliamentarians will engage in a vote of thanks, providing an opportunity for members to debate and discuss the content of the address. This discussion often sets the tone for the legislative and policy priorities for the new parliamentary term.
Political analysts note that the first session of a new parliament is a defining moment in Bangladesh’s democratic process. Beyond the formalities, it establishes procedural norms, ensures leadership continuity, and signals the government’s legislative intentions to both domestic and international observers. The proceedings of this session are expected to attract considerable public and media attention, reflecting the nation’s anticipation of the 13th Parliament’s direction and priorities.
With its combination of ceremonial and substantive functions, the inaugural session will mark both the commencement of a new legislative chapter and a critical forum for outlining the country’s governance roadmap for the coming year.
