The Bangladesh national cricket team is preparing for a defining winter on the African continent, as Cricket South Africa (CSA) officially released the itinerary for the upcoming multi-format tour. This high-stakes series is not merely a bilateral contest; it represents a critical juncture for the Tigers as they navigate the qualification pathway for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Under the current ICC regulations, Bangladesh must maintain a position within the top ten of the ODI rankings to secure direct entry into the 2027 showpiece event, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. With 23 One Day Internationals scheduled throughout this calendar year, the results of this particular tour will carry immense weight. For captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz and his squad, the series offers an invaluable dress rehearsal for the conditions they will face during the World Cup.
The tour commences with the red-ball segment, featuring two Test matches contested under the ICC World Test Championship umbrella. In a historic first, Bangladesh will compete at the iconic Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg for the opening Test. Furthermore, the second Test marks a return to Centurion after an eighteen-year absence, with the Tigers having last graced the venue in 2008.
Historically, South Africa has been a “final frontier” where Bangladesh has struggled for footing. In eight previous Tests on South African soil, the Tigers have suffered eight defeats, five of which were by an innings. However, recent improvements in their pace bowling department offer a glimmer of hope for a more competitive showing.
| Date | Match | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| 15–19 Nov | 1st Test Match | Johannesburg |
| 23–27 Nov | 2nd Test Match | Centurion |
| 1 Dec | 1st ODI | East London |
| 4 Dec | 2nd ODI | Gqeberha |
| 7 Dec | 3rd ODI | Cape Town |
| 10 Dec | 1st T20I | Kimberley |
| 12 Dec | 2nd T20I | Benoni |
| 13 Dec | 3rd T20I | Centurion |
Following the Test matches, the focus shifts to the shorter formats. While Bangladesh remains winless in T20Is in South Africa (four losses from four games), their ODI record provides a blueprint for success. During their 2022 tour, the Tigers secured a landmark 2-1 series victory, proving they can dismantle the Proteas in their own backyard. With the 1st ODI scheduled for East London on 1 December, the team will be eager to replicate that historic feat to bolster their world ranking.
