In a tragic incident early Tuesday morning, four members of the same family were severely burned in a gas line explosion at Daudkandi, Comilla. The explosion occurred during the pre-dawn hours while the family was observing sehri, the pre-dawn meal during Ramadan.
Emergency services rushed the victims to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute at around 6:00 a.m. The injured were identified as Monowara Begum (60), Zill Haque (37), Umme Humaira (30), and Hurram (2).
Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, the resident surgeon at the institute, confirmed the admission of the four patients and provided details on the extent of their injuries:
| Name | Age | Burn Coverage | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monowara Begum | 60 | 2% | Stable |
| Zill Haque | 37 | 54% | Critical |
| Umme Humaira | 30 | 65% | Critical |
| Hurram | 2 | 6% | Stable |
According to Dr. Rahman, Zill Haque and Umme Humaira sustained extensive burns and are currently in a critical condition. Monowara Begum and the toddler Hurram suffered relatively minor burns and are in stable condition.
Abdul Hannan, a firefighter from the Daudkandi Fire Service Control Room, told reporters that his team responded promptly after receiving the emergency call. “Fortunately, the fire did not spread widely. Initially, there were assumptions that a gas cylinder had exploded, but it has now been confirmed that the explosion originated from a gas line. The matter is under investigation,” he said.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution when using gas lines and appliances, especially during early morning hours when fatigue may increase the risk of accidents. Local officials have also announced that a formal inquiry will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the explosion and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
This incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for proper gas line maintenance and safety checks, particularly in densely populated areas. Emergency responders and medical staff continue to monitor the critical patients closely, while the investigation into the explosion is ongoing.
