At 10:40 am today, Mohammad Mostakur Rahman formally arrived at Bangladesh Bank to assume office as the country’s new governor. He was received by the bank’s three deputy governors and senior officials in a brief welcoming ceremony.
Following his appointment yesterday, Mohammad Mostakur Rahman reported for duty immediately. Upon entering the bank, he told waiting journalists succinctly, “I have arrived; let us start work; we will speak afterwards.”
Sources indicate that the new governor is scheduled to hold a series of meetings during the morning. These include discussions with the deputy governors, the head of the Banking and Financial Institutions Unit (BFIU), and chief economists. Later, he will meet with executive directors of the central bank. By 1:30 pm, he is expected to proceed to the Secretariat for official engagements.
The government yesterday cancelled the appointment of Ahsan H. Mansur and officially appointed Mohammad Mostakur Rahman as governor. Holding an FCMA degree specialising in cost management, Mohammad Mostakur Rahman is a businessman by profession. His appointment marks a historic first: he is the first private-sector businessperson to lead Bangladesh’s central bank.
He is set to become the 14th governor in the institution’s history. A notification issued yesterday by the Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance states that Mohammad Mostakur Rahman has been appointed for a four-year term, effective from the date he joins office, on condition that he severs all employment relations with other organisations. The government emphasised that this order has been issued in the public interest and will take immediate effect.
Earlier this morning, at approximately 8:30 am, Mohammad Mostakur Rahman left his residence in Gulshan in his personal vehicle, heading to the Bangladesh Bank headquarters in Motijheel. An official at his residence, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that he departed between 8:00 am and 8:30 am, driving himself to the bank.
