A 22-year-old college student was killed after the motorcycle he was travelling on collided with a truck in Maheshpur, Jhenaidah, on Tuesday night. Another person travelling with him was injured in the crash.
The deceased was identified as Rion, son of Montu Member of Krishnachandrapur village in Maheshpur. He was a second-year honours student at Jashore Cantonment College.
The accident took place at around 10.30pm on Tuesday (6 October) at Kata Khali on the Khalishpur-Kaliganj highway.
According to police and the victim’s family, Rion had travelled to Kaliganj that evening to buy a mobile phone. After making the purchase, he began his journey home on a motorcycle. Nafiz was accompanying him.
As they reached the Kata Khali area, the motorcycle collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction. The force of the collision left Rion critically injured. He died in the accident, while Nafiz sustained injuries.
Local people rushed to the scene following the crash and helped rescue the injured passenger. Nafiz was taken to Maheshpur Upazila Health Complex, where he was admitted for treatment. No further details about the nature or severity of his injuries were immediately available.
News of the accident prompted police to visit the site. Officers seized the truck involved in the collision and detained its driver for questioning as part of the investigation.
Maheshpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Azad Rahman confirmed the incident. He said police had visited the accident site after receiving the report and that the truck had been seized and its driver detained.
Rion’s death has left his family, friends and members of his local community mourning. As a university-bound young student in the early stages of his higher education, his sudden death has brought an abrupt end to his studies and future plans.
The crash also highlights the risks faced by motorcycle riders on highways, where they share roads with heavy vehicles such as trucks. Motorcyclists have comparatively little physical protection in a collision, making speed control, safe overtaking and careful movement around larger vehicles particularly important.
Police are carrying out the necessary legal procedures in connection with the incident. The circumstances surrounding the collision will be examined as part of the investigation, including how the motorcycle and the oncoming truck came into contact.
For Rion’s family, however, the investigation offers little immediate comfort. The journey home after an ordinary trip to buy a mobile phone ended in a fatal road crash, leaving a young college student’s life cut short at just 22.
