DU Student Union Calls Proctor Office Sit-In

The Dhaka University Central Student Union (DUCSU) has announced a sit-in at the university’s Proctor Office in protest against the placement of posters by the banned student organisation, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), across the campus.

The announcement was made on Saturday at 6:00 a.m. by our representative, A.B. Zubair, who stated, “The sit-in will commence at 1:00 p.m. in front of the Proctor Office. Students are urged to participate peacefully to express their concerns.”

In response to the same issue, the National Student Power (Jatiyo Chhatra Shakti) has called for a protest march later in the afternoon, signalling a day of heightened student activism across the campus.

Earlier, around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, a video was published on the Facebook page of Majharul Kabir Shoyon, the fugitive president of the Dhaka University branch of the banned BCL. The footage shows posters plastered across several key campus locations, including: the Madhur Canteen, Central Library, Central Mosque, the area adjacent to the Faculty of Arts building, DUCSU Cafeteria, Social Science Quadrangle, Faculty of Fine Arts, Hakim Chattar, Shamsunnahar Hall, Karzon Hall, and Jagannath Hall.

The posters reportedly carried the message, “Unconditional release of all political prisoners by Bangladesh Chhatra League”, drawing widespread criticism from student organisations and campus authorities alike.

According to campus sources, the sit-in at the Proctor Office aims to hold the university administration accountable for failing to prevent banned organisations from exercising undue influence and spreading politically charged messages on university property.

University officials have expressed concern over the provocative content of the posters, highlighting that such actions disrupt campus peace and violate university regulations. DUCSU leaders have appealed to students to participate responsibly, ensuring that the protest remains non-violent.

The incident underscores ongoing tensions within Dhaka University, where student political activity often intersects with administrative oversight, sparking debates about governance, campus safety, and freedom of expression. University authorities are reportedly reviewing security measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
