Muslim Players Disrespected During Iftar Pause

Manchester City faced Leeds United at Elland Road in a Premier League fixture that briefly paused in the 11th minute to allow City’s Muslim players to break their fast during Ramadan. The short interval, intended for iftar, was marred by disrespectful chants from some Leeds supporters, prompting strong condemnation from City’s manager, Pep Guardiola.

As the sun set over West Yorkshire, the referee temporarily halted play. During this break, City’s Muslim players—Omar Marmoush, Ryan Ait-Nouri, and Rhys Sherki—took refreshments to break their fast. Another City player, Abdulqadir Khusanov, also left the bench to participate in iftar. While this pause followed Premier League guidelines, sections of the Leeds crowd jeered, creating an unsettling atmosphere.

Speaking at full-time, Guardiola emphasised the importance of respecting religious customs and diversity on the field. He stated, “This is the modern era. Look at what is happening in the world today. Respect for religion and diversity is essential. The Premier League allows one or two minutes for players to break their fast, and that is what they did. What happened in the stands is unfortunate.”

Anti-discrimination organisation Kick It Out issued a statement describing the pause as part of an “established agreement dating back several years” and expressed disappointment at the behaviour of certain fans. The statement noted, “It is very disappointing that some Leeds United supporters jeered as Manchester City players broke their fast during the first half. The situation becomes more concerning given that the stadium’s big screens explained the procedure to spectators.”

Despite the disruption, Manchester City secured a 1–0 victory, with the only goal scored by Antony Semenyo. The match highlighted ongoing challenges in ensuring cultural and religious respect within professional football, even when league-sanctioned breaks are observed.
