Capital City Enjoys First Rain of Season

Residents of Dhaka were treated to rainfall on Monday, marking the first showers following the waning winter chill. Clouds had been gathering over the capital since early morning, and by midday, light rain was reported in scattered areas across the city.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued forecasts indicating that rainfall is not limited to Dhaka. Additional showers are expected in four other major divisions of the country today. According to the BMD, isolated rain or thundershowers may occur in Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chattogram, and Sylhet, while other regions are likely to experience partly cloudy skies with predominantly dry conditions.

The agency further predicted that on Tuesday, similar weather conditions will prevail, with isolated rain or thundershowers expected again in Dhaka, Barisal, Chattogram, and Sylhet.

In terms of temperature, the BMD expects daytime conditions across the country to remain largely unchanged, while night-time temperatures may dip slightly. In Dhaka, winds blowing from the west or northwest are forecast at speeds of 8 to 12 kilometres per hour, contributing to a mild and breezy atmosphere.

Weather Forecast Overview

Division Weather Today Weather Tomorrow Notes
Dhaka Light rain / thundershowers Isolated rain / thundershowers Western or north-western winds at 8–12 km/h
Khulna Isolated rain Partly cloudy Mainly dry
Barisal Light rain / thundershowers Isolated rain / thundershowers Mild temperatures
Chattogram Isolated rain / thundershowers Isolated rain / thundershowers Humidity moderate
Sylhet Light rain / thundershowers Isolated rain / thundershowers Slightly cooler night temperatures
Other Regions Partly cloudy, mainly dry Partly cloudy, mainly dry No significant rainfall expected

The recent showers offer a welcome respite from the lingering winter air, providing relief for city residents and contributing to the moisture levels across agricultural regions. Meteorologists have advised that while the rainfall is light and intermittent, it may result in temporary waterlogging in low-lying urban areas.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious during sudden spells of rain, particularly in traffic-heavy parts of the city. With temperatures remaining moderate and the skies partly cloudy elsewhere, the overall weather pattern is expected to be relatively stable over the next 24 to 48 hours.

The first rain of the season, arriving soon after the cold spell, brings a refreshing change to the capital city’s atmosphere and is likely to be appreciated by Dhaka residents eager for the onset of slightly cooler, wetter days.
