The 2026 Taite Music Prize has unveiled its ten shortlisted albums, highlighting some of New Zealand’s most compelling independent music of the past year. Independent Music NZ (IMNZ), in partnership with founding partner Recorded Music NZ, revealed the nominations today, showcasing a wide spectrum of genres from punk and post-punk to dream-pop and singer-songwriter albums.
This year’s nominees include Auckland punk trailblazers Dick Move, dream-pop ensemble Phoebe Rings, post-punk outfit Ringlets, and critically acclaimed singer-songwriters Marlon Williams and Reb Fountain, among others. Notably, all ten albums featured prominently in Rolling Stone AU/NZ’s Best New Zealand Albums of 2025 list.
Selected from releases over the previous calendar year, the winning album will receive a $12,500 cash prize, generously provided by Recorded Music NZ. Now in its 17th year, the Taite Music Prize “continues to honour albums of depth, vision, and artistic integrity, recognising work that transcends and contributes meaningfully to New Zealand’s cultural landscape.”
This year marks a significant milestone for the awards: the ceremony will take place at the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC) and, for the first time in its history, will be open to the public.
“Every year there is an astounding amount of exceptional music being produced in Aotearoa,” said IMNZ General Manager Dylan Pellett. “Celebrating these ten albums at a ceremony that the entire community can attend is a wonderful development.”
In addition to the main Taite Music Prize, three other awards will be presented during the ceremony: the Auckland Live Best Independent Debut Award, the NZ On Air Outstanding Music Journalism Award, and the IMNZ Classic Record Award. Nominees for these categories will be announced in the lead-up to the event.
Last year, the main prize was awarded to MOKOTRON for WAEREA, which also reached No. 2 on Rolling Stone AU/NZ’s Best New Zealand Albums of 2024 list.
