How Long Will the Middle East Conflict Last?

The past four days have transformed the Middle East into a theatre of conflict following a series of attacks by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets. Despite urgent calls from world leaders for restraint, military operations continue unabated, leaving global audiences anxiously asking: when will this war end?

The situation intensified after the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, which has sent shockwaves throughout the nation. Iranian authorities immediately vowed to pursue retribution and emphasised the need to protect the country’s sovereignty. Analysts warn that this assassination could exacerbate regional tensions and prolong the conflict, raising concerns over a potential protracted war.

Amidst the uncertainty, the timeline for the conflict has become a central question. United States President Donald Trump has offered varying assessments. On several occasions, he suggested the war could conclude within weeks, while at other times hinting it might extend longer.

According to a Saturday report by the BBC, Trump indicated that strikes against Iran could continue “throughout the week or as long as necessary.” However, in a subsequent interview with the New York Times on Sunday, he suggested that the United States and Israel might sustain operations for “four to five weeks at the current pace.” On Monday, speaking at the White House, he reinforced this estimate but added, “Our capability allows us to extend it much longer if needed.” Asked by CNN about the war’s expected duration, he replied, “About a month… I don’t want it to drag on. I have always thought it would last four weeks.”

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed similar sentiments, stressing that while the campaign against Iran may take some time to conclude, it will not become a long-term, endless conflict. On Fox News’ Hannity programme on Monday, he stated, “I have said it could be swift and decisive. It may take some time, but it will not last for years… this is not an endless war.”

As the Middle East braces for continued hostilities, uncertainty remains over how swiftly the conflict will resolve. Global leaders continue to urge caution, hoping that diplomacy may yet prevent a full-scale escalation, while the world watches closely, aware that the next few weeks could determine the region’s stability for months to come.
