On 3 March 1986, Metallica released Master of Puppets, a record that would redefine heavy metal and cement the band’s status as one of the most influential acts in modern music. Forty years on, the album is widely regarded as a landmark in the genre, blending raw aggression with sophisticated composition in a manner previously unseen in metal.
Master of Puppets was Metallica’s third full-length album, following Kill ‘Em All (1983) and Ride the Lightning (1984). While these earlier releases had begun to establish the band’s identity, it was Master of Puppets that propelled them into the global spotlight and solidified their reputation as pioneers of thrash metal.
Few bands can claim to have reshaped an entire musical genre, yet Metallica achieved precisely that. Master of Puppets introduced mainstream audiences to a heavier, more complex sound. Its aggressive guitar riffs, pounding drums, and Hetfield’s iconic vocals were paired with surprisingly melodic elements, striking a balance that appealed to both hardcore metal fans and newcomers alike.
The album’s title track, Master of Puppets, became the band’s signature song, combining intricate instrumentation with themes of control and addiction. Its enduring popularity was highlighted when it featured prominently in Netflix’s Stranger Things in 2022, propelling it back into the UK Top 40 decades after its initial release.
Upon release, the album received widespread acclaim from critics, who praised its ambitious arrangements and politically charged lyrics. It also performed strongly on the charts, reaching No. 29 on the Billboard 200—a remarkable achievement for a heavy metal record in the mid-1980s.
Tragically, the band’s bassist Cliff Burton died in a tour bus accident shortly after the album’s release. His virtuosic contributions to Master of Puppets remain a defining feature of the record. Burton was later succeeded by Jason Newsted, who continued to contribute to Metallica’s evolving sound.
Over the decades, Master of Puppets has accrued numerous accolades and certifications. It was eventually certified six-times Platinum by the RIAA and, in 2015, became the first heavy metal album to be preserved in the National Recording Registry—a recognition of its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.
