Shreya Ghoshal Rejects “Item Songs” To Protect Her Art

The Indian music industry is currently reeling from a series of high-profile announcements. Following the recent shockwaves caused by Arijit Singh’s hinted departure from film playback singing, the “Nightingale of India,” Shreya Ghoshal, has now shared a significant career decision. The National Award-winning vocalist has declared that she will no longer record “item songs” or tracks featuring suggestive, objectifying lyrics.

A Shift in Creative Philosophy

Known for her staggering versatility—ranging from the classical intricacies of ‘Mere Dholna’ to the high-energy folk-pop of ‘Chikni Chameli’—Ghoshal’s decision stems from a place of personal growth and moral responsibility. In a candid interview, she reflected on her past hits, specifically the 2012 chart-buster ‘Chikni Chameli’ from the film Agneepath.

While the song remains a staple of Bollywood dance, Ghoshal admitted that her perspective has evolved. “At the time, I didn’t feel uncomfortable,” she noted. “However, with maturity comes a deeper understanding of the lyrics. I now realise that many of these songs lean heavily into the objectification of women.”

Drawing the Line on Lyrics

The singer revealed that the success of her upbeat tracks led to a deluge of similar offers, many of which she found distasteful. She cited a specific instance where a lyricist friend proposed a song with lines comparing a woman to “chicken to be consumed.” Ghoshal summarily rejected the track, citing a lack of artistic merit and respect.

She emphasized that as a global performer, her audience includes countless children. “When a song becomes a hit, I am expected to perform it on stage. It is profoundly uncomfortable to sing suggestive lines in front of families and young fans,” she explained.

Shreya Ghoshal’s Versatile Discography: A Comparison

Song Title Genre Cinematic Context Impact/Legacy
Mere Dholna Semi-Classical Bhool Bhulaiyaa Masterclass in ‘Taan’ & ‘Sargam’
Chikni Chameli Item/Item Folk Agneepath Culturally iconic dance track
Piyu Bole Romantic Ballad Parineeta Established her as a premier vocalist
Deewani Mastani Period Fusion Bajirao Mastani National Award-winning performance

Artistry Over Popularity

Ghoshal clarified that she does not regret her past work, including ‘Chikni Chameli’, which she still appreciates for its musical arrangement. However, she is now prioritising her legacy over commercial trends. By vowing to be more selective, she joins a growing movement of Indian artists advocating for better representation of women in lyrical content.

While she isn’t retiring from music—unlike the rumours surrounding some of her peers—her “play” button for suggestive cinema tracks has officially been switched off.
