North Korea Coach Cautious About Rituparna’s Speed and Attack

Bangladesh is participating in Group B of the Women’s Asian Cup, alongside the reigning champions China and former champions North Korea. The tournament features a total of 12 teams, with North Korea holding the highest FIFA ranking among them at 7.

On Thursday, ahead of their Group B encounter, North Korea coach Ri Son Ho commended Bangladesh’s attacking capabilities, highlighting three players as particularly dangerous threats.

“The Bangladesh team is much stronger than I anticipated,” Ri said. “Their attack is rapid and highly effective. They transition from defence to attack with remarkable skill. Our defenders must remain alert to prevent them from creating scoring opportunities.” He singled out three key attackers, noting, “Number 17, Rituparna Chakma, is exceptionally fast on the left flank and can launch dangerous attacks with ease.”

Bangladesh impressed in their tournament opener against China. Rituparna Chakma and Monika broke through the Chinese defence multiple times, creating significant scoring chances. Notably, Rituparna’s long-range shot in the 14th minute captured the attention of both the audience and coaching staff.

The 12-team tournament is divided into three groups. The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarter-finals. Ri Son Ho emphasised, “We aim to win every match. Increasing goal difference is not our primary focus, but it may be important in later stages for favourable outcomes.”

This fixture marks a rare face-off between Bangladesh and North Korea. The last encounter took place in 2019 when Dhaka Abahani Club faced April 25 of North Korea. Reflecting on the six-year gap, Ri said, “The standard of football in South and South-East Asia has improved significantly. Teams like Bangladesh are developing rapidly. The match against China yesterday clearly demonstrates that Bangladesh is now among Asia’s stronger teams.”

Bangladesh’s debut in the Women’s Asian Cup has drawn widespread attention. Rituparna’s speed and attacking skill have forced opponents to remain vigilant. Under the guidance of coach Peter Butler, the players are adapting quickly and establishing Bangladesh as a rising force in women’s football in Asia.

Women’s Asian Cup Group B Summary

The data reflects Bangladesh’s growing stature in Asian women’s football, with Rituparna Chakma emerging as a standout player due to her pace and attacking proficiency.
