Concerns are mounting over the possibility of severe weather across Bangladesh during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, with meteorologists warning that powerful seasonal storms may strike the country around the festive period.
According to weather forecaster Mostafa Kamal Palash, there is a significant likelihood that strong pre-monsoon storms could sweep across Bangladesh on the day of Eid as well as in the days immediately preceding it. The warning was shared on Thursday afternoon through a statement posted on his verified account on the social media platform Facebook.
In his message, Palash cautioned that the country could experience intense Kalboishakhi storms—powerful seasonal squalls typically seen in the region during the pre-monsoon period. These storms are often accompanied by violent winds, heavy rainfall, hailstorms and severe lightning.
He warned that both the day of Eid al-Fitr and the day before it could see widespread storm activity across Bangladesh. Such weather conditions, if realised, could disrupt travel, outdoor prayers and festive gatherings traditionally associated with the celebration.
Meteorological analysis suggests that the most critical window for severe weather may fall between 16 and 18 March, when atmospheric conditions could favour the formation of strong thunderstorm systems capable of producing destructive gusts and hail.
Kalboishakhi storms are well known across eastern India and Bangladesh for their sudden onset and intensity. Within a short period, they can generate powerful wind gusts capable of damaging homes, uprooting trees and disrupting electricity lines. Lightning strikes during these storms also pose a significant risk, particularly in rural and open areas.
Hailstorms, another possible feature of these weather systems, can damage crops and property. Farmers in particular remain vulnerable during this time of year, as agricultural fields often lie exposed to the elements.
If such storms occur during Eid, large gatherings at mosques and open fields could face disruptions, prompting authorities to advise caution and encourage people to monitor official weather updates closely.
| Date | Expected Weather Risk | Possible Hazards |
|---|---|---|
| 16 March | High likelihood of strong thunderstorms | Gusty winds, lightning, heavy rain |
| 17 March | Continued storm activity possible | Hailstorms, lightning strikes |
| 18 March | Potential for powerful seasonal squalls | Severe winds and heavy rainfall |
Eid-ul-Fitr is one of the most significant religious celebrations in the Muslim calendar, marked by communal prayers, family gatherings and extensive travel as people return to their hometowns. Any severe weather during this period could complicate travel plans and outdoor festivities.
Strong winds and lightning may affect transportation, particularly river travel and road journeys, while sudden downpours could disrupt public prayer arrangements traditionally held in open spaces.
Weather experts emphasise that forecasts for severe storms remain subject to change as atmospheric conditions evolve. However, the possibility of strong Kalboishakhi systems forming during the Eid period highlights the need for preparedness.
Authorities and citizens alike are encouraged to follow updated bulletins from meteorological services, take precautions during thunderstorms, and avoid open areas during lightning activity.
If the forecast materialises, this year’s Eid celebrations across Bangladesh may take place under the shadow of turbulent skies, reminding residents of the region’s unpredictable pre-monsoon climate.
