The countdown to the FIFA World Cup has intensified, and fans were eagerly anticipating seeing Cristiano Ronaldo feature for a record sixth time. However, alarm bells have rung for Portugal as the national captain faces a hamstring injury now described as more serious than initially feared. This was confirmed by Al Nassr manager Jorge Jesus on Friday.
Ronaldo sustained the injury during Al Nassr’s 3-1 victory over Al Fayha in the Saudi Pro League last week. The 41-year-old Portuguese forward was forced to leave the pitch prematurely and has since travelled to Madrid for specialised treatment.
Speaking ahead of Al Nassr’s home league clash against Neom SC on Saturday, Jesus provided a detailed update on Ronaldo’s condition:
“Cristiano had to leave the previous match due to a muscle injury. After several examinations, it has become clear that the injury is more serious than we initially expected. He will require both rest and treatment. Cristiano will go to Spain for medical care, just as any other player would in similar circumstances.”
Ronaldo will undergo treatment under the supervision of his personal physiotherapist. While no exact timeline for his return has been set, hopes are pinned on him regaining fitness ahead of Portugal’s upcoming international friendlies later this month.
Portugal is scheduled to face Mexico at the Azteca Stadium on 28 March, followed by a clash against the United States in Atlanta on 31 March. The timing of these matches places additional pressure on Ronaldo’s recovery if he is to be available for selection.
Meanwhile, in the Saudi Pro League, Ronaldo remains a prolific scorer. Currently third on the top scorers list with 21 goals, he trails behind Al Ahli’s English forward Ivan Toney, who leads with 24 goals. Al Nassr has also slipped from the summit of the league table, now one point behind Al Ahli.
| Rank | Player | Club | Goals |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ivan Toney | Al Ahli | 24 |
| 2 | Player X | Club Y | 22 |
| 3 | Cristiano Ronaldo | Al Nassr | 21 |
Ronaldo’s fitness remains a pivotal concern not only for his club ambitions but also for Portugal’s World Cup aspirations, as the legendary forward seeks to maintain his record of international excellence despite advancing age.
