Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons has emphasised that sleepless nights over direct qualification for the 2027 ODI Cricket World Cup are unnecessary. Rather than fixating on rankings, Simmons is prioritising the improvement of Bangladesh’s performance in the one-day international (ODI) format, with an eye on the World Cup scheduled for October 2027, some 19 months from now.
Bangladesh’s preparation for the 2027 World Cup officially begins with a three-match ODI series against Pakistan, starting tomorrow. The series marks Bangladesh’s return to the ODI format after a four-month break. The immediate objective is to climb the ICC ODI rankings in order to secure direct qualification for the World Cup.
To play in the 14-team tournament directly, Bangladesh must be among the top eight teams in the ICC ODI rankings by 31 March 2027. Currently, Bangladesh sits tenth with 74 rating points, just behind the West Indies, who hold 77 points. Simmons is determined to use upcoming matches to elevate the team’s consistency and skill.
Addressing the media at a press conference in Mirpur on Monday ahead of the Pakistan series, Simmons stated:
“We should focus on improving our ODI standards rather than worrying about the direct qualification scenario. Our main goal is to climb the rankings. It is not just about finishing in the top eight; it is about consistently playing good cricket and advancing as a team.”
He added that preparations for the World Cup in South Africa require tactical planning, particularly regarding the bowling attack:
“We aim to play at least three fast bowlers. While there might be scenarios where three spinners are needed, no spinner will bowl only two overs. We need to prepare for the conditions where the tournament will be held. Playing three pacers is our primary target.”
Simmons also highlighted the importance of middle overs performance:
“We have not been as effective in the middle overs as we would like. Analysing how many runs, singles, or boundaries we concede during this period is critical. This constitutes a major part of the 50-over game.”
Reflecting on the Mirpur pitch, Simmons expressed optimism:
“The wicket looks better compared to previous series. We concluded the West Indies series successfully and aim to build on that momentum.”
