A local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Barishal has been expelled from his party position after being arrested with a quantity of yaba tablets and a large sum of cash during a raid by anti-narcotics authorities. The decision was taken following allegations of his involvement in drug-related activities, which party officials described as a serious violation of organisational discipline and principles.
The expelled individual, Md Enamul Howlader, previously served as president of Ward No. 5 of the Rahmatpur Union BNP in Babuganj upazila of Barishal district. According to local BNP leaders, the disciplinary measure was enforced shortly after his arrest, as the party sought to distance itself from activities that could tarnish its public image.
The expulsion was formally announced on Thursday (12 March) through a joint statement signed by Abul Karim Hang, President of Rahmatpur Union BNP, and Rajon Sikder, the Union’s General Secretary. The notice was issued through the party’s local office and confirmed by Md Nizam Howlader, the office secretary of the Rahmatpur Union BNP.
According to the statement, Enamul Howlader was removed from his post due to “clear allegations of involvement in narcotics-related activities and conduct contrary to the party’s policies, ideals and organisational discipline.” The notice also instructed party members at all levels not to involve the expelled leader in any organisational programmes or maintain political contact with him regarding party affairs.
The arrest took place on Wednesday at approximately 1:30 pm when a team from the Barishal district office of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) conducted a raid at Enamul’s residence in Khudrakathi village under Rahmatpur Union. The operation was carried out with the assistance of Barishal Metropolitan Police under the Airport Police Station jurisdiction.
During the raid, officials recovered 326 yaba tablets along with cash amounting to 659,000 Bangladeshi taka from the premises. Enamul Howlader, the son of Altaf Hossain of Khudrakathi village, was subsequently taken into custody.
Authorities reported that the operation followed intelligence suggesting that Enamul had been involved in drug distribution for a prolonged period. Investigators alleged that he regularly conducted yaba sales from a room on the upper floor of his residence, attracting buyers from different areas who reportedly visited the property to purchase the tablets.
Officials further stated that members of his family had attempted on several occasions to persuade him to cease the illegal activity, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
To verify the allegations, DNC personnel reportedly approached the residence disguised as customers seeking to purchase yaba tablets. After confirming the illicit transaction, officers immediately launched a formal raid, resulting in the seizure of narcotics and cash and the arrest of the suspect.
