The Education Minister, Dr. A. N. M. Ehsanul Haque Milon, announced on Monday that the lottery system for admission to classes one through nine in both public and private schools across the country will be abolished. The declaration was made at a press conference held at the Ministry of Education’s Secondary and Higher Education Division.
Speaking to reporters, Dr. Milon stated that the traditional lottery-based admission procedure, long criticised for its lack of transparency, will no longer be used. He emphasised that merit and systematic evaluation will guide the new admission approach, aiming to ensure fair access to quality education for students nationwide.
The minister also confirmed that scholarship examinations would continue as before, maintaining the existing framework for awarding academic scholarships to deserving students.
Following the admissions announcement, the press conference also included updates on higher education appointments. Dr. Milon disclosed the latest appointments of vice-chancellors (VCs) for several prominent universities and the appointment of a new chairman for the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Dr. Milon elaborated that these appointments reflect the government’s commitment to strengthening leadership in higher education and ensuring robust governance across universities. He added that the new vice-chancellors would focus on modernising curricula, promoting research, and enhancing the quality of teaching and student services.
The minister concluded by reiterating the government’s vision of improving educational standards from primary through tertiary levels, promising more reforms aimed at accessibility, transparency, and quality enhancement in the coming months.
