Police in Faridpur have revealed that the younger brother of a man who was brutally murdered earlier this month was allegedly the principal architect behind the killing. Investigators say the attack stemmed from a combination of family disputes and tensions related to narcotics transactions.
The victim, Raju Sheikh (36), was a resident of the Muslim Colony area of Station Bazaar in Kutibari Mahalla No. 2 in Faridpur town. He died on the night of 2 March after being attacked with sharp weapons by a group of assailants.
According to police, the assault occurred at approximately 10:00 p.m. in front of a butcher’s shop in the Station Bazaar area of Faridpur. Witnesses reported that several individuals suddenly descended upon Raju Sheikh and attacked him with machetes and other sharp weapons.
Severely injured, he was quickly rescued by local residents and rushed to the trauma centre of Faridpur Medical College Hospital. Despite emergency treatment by doctors, he succumbed to his injuries at around 11:30 p.m. the same night.
Following the incident, the victim’s mother, Chhobi Begum, filed a murder case at Faridpur Kotwali Police Station on 3 March. The initial complaint named ten suspects and listed several unidentified individuals as additional accused. Notably, the victim’s younger brother was not mentioned in the original case filing.
At a press briefing held at the office of the Superintendent of Police on Monday afternoon, Superintendent of Police Nazrul Islam stated that investigators uncovered new details after examining witness statements, local intelligence and digital evidence.
According to the police investigation, Ibrahim Sheikh (26)—the victim’s younger brother—allegedly planned the attack. Authorities believe longstanding family conflicts and disputes over drug-related financial dealings triggered the conspiracy.
Police sources said that the two brothers had been involved in an ongoing dispute for some time. Tensions escalated dramatically three days before the murder, when Raju reportedly attacked Ibrahim with a sharp weapon during an altercation. Investigators believe this incident prompted Ibrahim to seek revenge and orchestrate the fatal assault.
Ibrahim allegedly enlisted several associates—identified as Hridoy, Sakib, Robiul, Maruf and Swapno—to carry out the attack in accordance with a premeditated plan.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Azmir Hossain said the victim had previously been implicated in multiple narcotics-related offences.
Police records show that Raju Sheikh faced four separate cases under the Narcotics Control Act. Investigators further allege that he obtained drugs from several individuals—including the mother and mother-in-law of suspect Hridoy, as well as from Swapno—but failed to pay them after selling the narcotics.
This alleged financial dispute reportedly intensified resentment among those involved and contributed to the violent outcome.
The case is being investigated by Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam of Faridpur Kotwali Police Station. He stated that after the murder the suspects fled to various parts of the country, including Dhaka.
Using confidential informants and technological tracking methods, police conducted coordinated operations in multiple districts. Several suspects were apprehended from Santhia in Pabna district, while others were arrested from different locations in Faridpur.
So far, eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the murder.
On Sunday night, acting on information obtained during interrogations, police conducted a raid in the Habeli Gopalpur area of Kotwali and recovered the weapons believed to have been used in the attack.
