The festive season has officially begun in Bangladesh, as the government’s seven-day holiday for Eid-ul-Fitr commenced on Tuesday. In this context, commuters have been informed about the operation schedule of the metro rail system by Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL).
According to an official notice issued by DMTCL on Monday, 16 March, metro rail services will be suspended only on the day of Eid itself. Operations will resume as per the regular timetable from the day following the celebration. This arrangement aims to facilitate both passengers and staff in observing the religious festival without disruption.
The anticipated date for Eid-ul-Fitr is 21 March, subject to the sighting of the moon. This year, the government has also aligned the holiday calendar with Shab-e-Qadr on 17 March, granting public servants and many private sector employees a continuous seven-day holiday, allowing extended time with family and for religious observances.
For clarity, the metro rail schedule during the holiday period is summarised in the table below:
| Date | Day | Metro Rail Service Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 17 March | Tuesday | Operational | Regular service continues |
| 18 March | Wednesday | Operational | Regular service continues |
| 19 March | Thursday | Operational | Regular service continues |
| 20 March | Friday | Operational | Regular service continues |
| 21 March | Saturday (Eid Day) | Suspended | Full-day closure for Eid celebrations |
| 22 March | Sunday | Operational | Services resume as normal |
| 23 March | Monday | Operational | Regular schedule |
DMTCL has urged passengers to plan their journeys accordingly, particularly on Eid day when all metro rail lines will remain closed. Commuters are encouraged to seek alternative transportation on 21 March to avoid inconvenience.
This temporary suspension underscores DMTCL’s commitment to balancing efficient public transport operations with the cultural and religious significance of national festivities. Residents and visitors in Dhaka are advised to stay updated with any further announcements from the metro authority, especially if moon-sighting reports affect the exact date of Eid.
