A tragic incident in Gopalganj has left the local community and the academic circle of Gopalganj Science and Technology University (GOBIPRBI) in shock, after a female student reportedly took her own life amid a domestic dispute. The event occurred on Monday afternoon, 16 March 2026, in her residence in the Ghonapara area of Gopalganj town.
The deceased, Deepa Das, was a student of the 2020–21 cohort in the Bangla Department at GOBIPRBI. Reports indicate that the suicide followed a heated argument with her husband. According to family and local sources, Deepa allegedly locked her husband in one room before going into an adjacent room, where she used her scarf to hang herself from the ceiling fan.
Her husband, alerted by the commotion, immediately called the house guard and nearby neighbours. They broke down the door to find Deepa in a hanging state and rushed to rescue her. Sadly, she was pronounced dead upon arrival at Gopalganj Sadar Hospital, despite prompt medical attention.
Associate Professor Zakia Sultana Mukta of the Bangla Department said that the department and university administration were informed of the incident on Monday afternoon. She confirmed visiting the Sadar Hospital and witnessing Deepa’s body in the morgue. Mukta described the incident as a profound shock to both faculty and students, noting that the suicide was reportedly linked to ongoing marital discord.
Deepa’s classmate, Rifat Islam, described her as a highly intelligent and diligent student. He added that the news of her death due to marital conflict has deeply saddened her peers and faculty, highlighting the pressures faced by young students balancing academic and personal lives.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sarwar Hossain Kalbela confirmed that a post-mortem was conducted and the body was subsequently handed over to the family. A case of unnatural death has been registered at Gopalganj Sadar Police Station. Authorities stated that, based on initial inquiries, the act appeared to have been precipitated by domestic tension with her husband.
